Film producer Haruki Kadokawa changed the landscape of Japanese cinema forever when he introduced the blockbuster concept to the country with this gripping crime drama featuring a star-studded cast.
When mixed-race Johnny Hayward (Flower Travellin’ Band singer Joe Yamanaka) travels from his Harlem home to Tokyo, he becomes the victim of a brutal stabbing in the elevator of a luxury hotel where exclusive fashion designer Kyoko (Mariko Okada) is holding a fashion show. That same night, Kyoko's son and his powerful politician husband Yohei (Toshiro Mifune) are involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident and flee the country. Detective Munesue (Yusaku Matsuda, The Game Trilogy) suspects the events may be connected and heads to New York to investigate Johnny's background. To do so, he enlists the help of local detective Ken Shuftan (George Kennedy, Airport), whose own connections to Japan bring back painful memories of Munesue's childhood.
The film is an adaptation of Seiichi Morimura's best-selling novel of the same name, directed by Junya Sato (The Bullet Train, Manhunt) and written by Zenzo Matsuyama (The Human Condition trilogy). Shot on location in Japan and New York by veteran cinematographer Shinsaku Himeda (Pigs and Battleships, Vengeance is Mine), Proof of the Man is a compelling exploration of racial identity and trauma from the post-war occupation period, framed in the form of a crime thriller.
Arrow Video is proud to present the film for the first time outside of Japan for the home video market in an all-new colour from a new 4K restoration of Kadokawa.translated English subtitles
